Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Growing to serve the community

Overview

Located in Belleville, Ontario, Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine specializes in the care of child and youth health—diagnosing and treating infants and infants at risk with acute medical problems and following-up and monitoring the development of premature infants and infants at risk. Quinte has been using Nightingale On Demand since December 2009.

Serving the community through innovation

Previously a fitness centre, Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is currently undergoing extensive renovations that will transform the clinic into a state of the art healthcare facility with dedicated wings to treat a multitude of health issues. But they’re serving their community in other ways, too. On the second floor of the clinic are plans for an open-concept office space where small start-ups can rent a desk complete with computer and chair as a way to get their businesses going. It’s similar to setting up a workstation at the local coffee chain with a Wi-Fi hotspot, only this provides a more permanent residency for the entrepreneur who’s simply looking for their big break. The space will be labeled The Loft for its inviting, trendy atmosphere..

The challenge

Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is a busy practice. In addition to finding an EMR that could cater to the specific needs of a Pediatrician, they were looking for ways to improve efficiency, being the only pediatric walk-in clinic in the area. With the local hospital’s ER overflowing with cases, patients are often redirected to Quinte for more immediate assistance. The practice also needed to establish a new transcription format, one that would follow a “sooner than later” formula, says Peter Gabriel, Practice Administrator for Quinte. “A traditional model is too time consuming,” he says, “And 70% of our patient flow comes from referrals from family doctors and other specialists.”

The solution

Nightingale On Demand’s comprehensive suite of flexible tools allow the user to adapt the software to their practice, though what’s unique about Quinte is their ability to optimize the software for their own benefit. “Our pediatric office is not a primary care facility,” Peter says. “To find software that caters to our specific consultation practice was challenging. What we discovered with Nightingale On Demand is that we could customize all our templates, letters etc. to whatever we need. Once these were setup, inputting data was as simple as a click of a mouse.” For Peter, there’s always something new to learn about Nightingale On Demand, and if there are ever any issues, his ability to think outside the box and work with Nightingale’s team to solve those issues or brainstorm about how to best reach a solution has made him one of our advanced users. “I can’t say enough about the team support at Nightingale. From calling tech support to different individuals from within Nightingale, everyone has been amazing—working with us to solve any problem we might have. To have that personal touch in a publicly traded company makes it a long lasting relationship.”

Peter also acknowledges the value of a cloud based (ASP) model. When evaluating EMR options for Quinte, an ASP solution was at the top of the wish list, having been previously with a costly LCS provider for quite some time. “Nightingale EMR has been a great addition to our busy pediatric office, he says, adding, “One of the biggest reasons we chose Nightingale was the application server model. Having only to plug into the internet to access our EMR eliminates all the frustrations that technology can bring.” This year, Quinte decided to take advantage of Nightingale’s transcription service, SmartScribes. Peter describes how the service has benefited the practice, “SmartScribes has been invaluable to our office. Once we discovered SmartScribes, it has truly improved the speed and accuracy of reports going back to family doctors. This service eliminates so many steps that are involved with dictation. To have the report sent directly into Nightingale saves both time and money.”

What’s next?

Peter Gabriel has been quite pleased with Nightingale, and has some great ideas about how to best optimize its use for Quinte. “Our goal is to go paperless, and we’re definitely moving in that direction,” says Peter. “ The data management system has been extremely useful to us. All incoming paper faxes are now a digital copy on our computer. From there it is just a few clicks off the mouse to upload it into Nightingale On Demand. This will cut down our paper usage dramatically and reduce the amount of paper we purchase. Less paper in a medical office is an all around good thing!”

It’s this kind of forward thinking that can take a practice to a new level of efficiency and productivity, and Quinte Pediatrics has all the right elements in place to get there.
